In a move that’s already sending ripples through the Egyptian content creation community, Google announced it will transition all payments for AdSense, AdSense for YouTube, AdMob, and Ad Manager to Egyptian Pound (EGP) starting May 1, 2025. Google’s notification to users in Egypt reads, “We will no longer pay earnings in US dollars in Egypt.”

Starting April 1, 2025, new payment accounts will be created for all users of Google’s services in Egypt. Creators will need to link a local bank account capable of receiving payments in Egyptian Pounds to ensure a seamless transition. It’s important to note that while the old payment accounts in US Dollars will be deactivated in April 2025, users will still have access to their payment history, so they won’t lose track of past activities.

Why is Google making this change? It’s all part of a larger initiative to transition payments worldwide into local currencies. Egypt joins countries like Chile, Indonesia, Jordan, and Mexico, where Google has implemented similar changes.

We don’t need this in Nigeria, please. Let’s be mature 😭!!

The news has sparked a flurry of conversations online, with many content creators expressing concerns about how this transition will impact their earnings. The US Dollar is often seen as a more stable currency for income generation, especially given considerable fluctuations the Egyptian Pound has experienced in recent years - has she met her Naira cousin?

In response to these concerns, Google emphasizes its commitment to the Egyptian creator community; assuring users that the overall value received by creators and advertisers will not change; only the currency in which payments are issued will differ. “We recognize that financial adjustments can take time, which is why we are notifying our community six months ahead of the change,” says Google.
